PLOT

During the French and Indian War in 1757, Mohican Chingachgook (Russell Means) with his sons, Uncas (Eric Schweig) and adopted white Nathaniel Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), visit the Cameron frontier household. Friend Jack Winthrop (Edward Blatchford) tells them he is gathering militia for the British army.

General Webb agrees to grant the militia leave if their homes are attacked, in return for their reinforcement of Colonel Edmund Munro (Maurice Roëves) at Fort William Henry. Newly arrived Major Duncan Heyward (Steven Waddington) and native Magua (Wes Studi) are tasked with escorting Munro's daughters, Cora (Madeleine Stowe) and Alice (Jodhi May), from Albany to their father at the fort.

Duncan wishes to marry Cora, but she professes friendship only. Magua leads the group into an ambush by his Huron party. Hawkeye, Uncas and Chingachgook come across the attack as Magua escapes and save Duncan, Cora and Alice, deciding to escort them to the fort.

Along the way the Cameron home is found razed and its occupants murdered. The group arrive to find the fort under siege by the French, but sneak in. Munro is surprised at his daughters’ arrival; he had warned them to stay away, but Magua schemed to reunite the family.

The fort can only hold for three more days, so a messenger is sent to General Webb for help. To Duncan's chagrin, Cora and Hawkeye are drawn to each other, so he resentfully denies that the razing of the Cameron homestead took place.

Munro therefore refuses to let Jack and the militia leave to defend their homes. Hawkeye secretly helps them escape anyway, but is arrested for sedition and sentenced to hang despite Cora's pleas.

The French General Montcalm (Patrice Chéreau) generously offers all in the fort safe passage to Albany if they surrender and vow to never fight again. Munro reluctantly accepts after Montcalm shows Webb’s intercepted message, showing that no aid is forthcoming.

今月はバレンタインデーということで、恋愛ものなんぞどうかなと思っていて、かつアカデミー賞も近いこともあり、恋愛要素もあってアカデミーに関連する映画はなんぞやと考えたところ、『ラスト・オブ・モヒカン』が浮かんだ。

映画ファンならその関連性はすぐにわかるとは思うんだけど、２０１３年２月２４日（現地時間）に行われる第８５回アカデミー賞の本命とも言われるスティーヴン・スピルバーグ監督の『リンカーン』に、ラスト・オブ～のダニエル・デイ＝ルイスが主演しているからだ。

ダニエル・デイ＝ルイス、すばらしい俳優さんだね。１９８９年『マイ・レフトフット』でアカデミー主演男優賞受賞獲得、１９９７年『ゼア・ウィル・ビー・ブラッド』で２度目の主演男優賞獲得、今回の『リンカーン』で史上初の３度目の主演男優賞獲得かと言われている。今週お届けする『ラスト・オブ・モヒカン』はそんなダニエルの美しくも激しく悲しい恋愛活劇だ。

最近のアメリカ映画を目の当たりにしていると、ＣＧアニメかヒーロー実写ものばかり、はたまたチープで低俗なモキュメンタリー映画（家庭用ビデオで撮った作りの映画）ばかり。映画でなければ冗長で似たようなドラマがてんこ盛りと、アメリカのエンターテインメントもなんだかくだらなくなってしまったとがっかりさせられてしまう。しかし、今回の『リンカーン』におけるスティーヴン・スピルバーグ監督の底力や、俳優ダニエル・デイ＝ルイスのすばらしさ、そして他ノミネート作品や俳優陣を見ていると、決して捨てたものではないなと感じるのだ。

本年度のアカデミー作品賞をざっと見てみよう。

『愛、 アムール』、『アルゴ』、『ハッシュパピー　バスタブ島の少女』、『ジャンゴ　繋がれざる者』、『レ・ミゼラブル』、『ライフ・オブ・パイ　トラと漂流した227日』、『世界にひとつのプレイブック』、『ゼロ・ダーク・サーティ』、そして『リンカーン』。

どれも「観たいなー」と思わせる魅力ある映画ばかりだ。

『愛、 アムール』においては、主演女優賞にノミネートされているエマニュエル・リバは、８０を超える年齢でヌードを披露するほどの熱演をしているそうだ。『アルゴ』は監督としても評価の高いベン・アフレックの作品。２０１０年の『ザ・タウン』も面白かった。『ハッシュパピー～』の主演の少女クワベンジャネ・ウォレス（撮影当事６歳）は、年齢を偽ってまでオーディションに申し込み４,０００人の中から選ばれたそうだ。

『ジャンゴ～』はクエンティン・タランティーノの監督作品。２００９年のブラッド・ピット主演の『イングロリアス・バスターズ』に続く作品賞ノミネートだ。『レ・ミゼラブル』はミュージカルもこなすヒュー・ジャックマン主演。共演のアン･ハサウェイが劇中に切り落とす髪の毛は地毛だそうだ。作品として個人的に最も観たいのは『ライフ・オブ・パイ　トラと漂流した227日』。感動作『ブロークバック・マウンテン』のアン・リー監督作だ。こんな奇想天外な発想は初めてだ。わくわくする。

アカデミー賞っぽくない感じがするロマンティック･コメディの『世界にひとつのプレイブック』。こちらは女性ファンも非常に多いブラッドリー・クーパーと、今最も注目の若手女優で本作で主演女優賞にもノミネートされているジェニファー・ローレンスの共演作。本作では、共演のロバート・デ・ニーロも助演男優賞でノミネートされている。ジェニーファー・ローレンスに並びハリウッドで注目されている実力派女優と言えばジェシカ・チャステインだ。そのジャシカは、オサマ・ビンラディン暗殺作戦の裏側を描いた『ゼロ・ダーク・シティ』で女性分析官を熱演、主演女優賞にもノミネートされている。

作品賞にはノミネートされなかったけど、主演女優賞でノミネートされているナオミ・ワッツ主演の『インポッシブル』が興味深い。こちらは２００４年のスマトラ島沖地震での家族の実話を描いた物語だ。

このように、すばらしい作品がずらりと並んでいる。こんなに『観たいなー』と思ったのは初めてじゃないかな。なんとか時間を作って全部観たいね。もちろん、『日本語字幕あり』になっちゃうけど。いや、でもきっといつかはっ！

話が脱線して膨らんでしまったけど、今週は『ラスト・オブ・モヒカン』、いってみよう～。

『誘惑のアフロディーテ』。映画の内容はいいとして、これまたなんだか変な邦題だよね。原題は"Mighty Aphrodite" 。"Mighty"に「誘惑」なんて意味はない。しかしこの場合の"Mighty（すごい・強い）"を日本語にするのも難しい。結局、日本語が難しいので日本語に訳すとおかしくなっちゃうんだよね。結果、映画の雰囲気に合わせた邦題や宣伝文句になるようなものになってしまう。

このミラ・ソルヴィノのセクシーな姿のパッケージで『誘惑の～』なんて言われちゃうと、「そういう映画なんだ」って思っちゃうよね。そうじゃなくて、本作はウディ･アレン作のちゃんとしたロマンティック・コメディなのだ。もちろん、ミラのキュートさやセクシーさで客をひきつけていることには違いないんだけど。数々の変な邦題を目の当たりにして、ほとほと日本人のセンスのなさに呆れてしまし、こういうタイトルにしないと観る動機に至らないというのもね。

問題はひとつだ。それは、「日本人がいつまでも英語がわからないということ」。日本語に直してもらわないとわからない。わかろうともしない。これが問題なんだ。同じアジア圏でも、中国人や韓国人は英語を使える人が多い。友人でもトリリンガルがいる。聞くところによると、韓国では日本のようになんでも母国語に訳されていないということだ。日本では何から何まで丁寧に日本語に訳されている。韓国ではそのようなことがないので、欧米から来たものを理解するために必死で英語を勉強するそうだ。中国でも同じなんじゃないかな。「あっという間に英語が聴き取れるようになる！喋れるようになる！」なんて英語教材が未だに売れているようだけど、こんなの海外の人たちから大笑いされるよ。言語を簡単に習得できるなんて不可能。ちゃんと英語を勉強して、日本人も世界のスタンダードに立てるようになろう！

PLOT

A Greek chorus narrates and comments—and Oedipus, Jocasta, Tiresias, and Cassandra sometimes directly intervene—in this modern fable.

Sportswriter Lenny Weinrib (Woody Allen) is married to the career-driven Amanda (Helena Bonham Carter), who wants a baby but because she cannot afford to get pregnant due to her job, she says that they will adopt.

Lenny is opposed to this, but Amanda always has her way, so they adopt a baby boy, whom they name Max.


As Max, it becomes clear he is highly intelligent. Lenny becomes obsessed with learning the identity of Max's biological parents. After great difficulty, Lenny finally locates Max's mother prostitute and part-time porn star Linda Ash (Mira Sorvino).

Lenny makes an "appointment" with her. At first, Linda appears to be a dumb blonde with a crude sense of humor, along with delusions of becoming an actress. Lenny does not sleep with her and urges her to stop being a prostitute, but Linda becomes furious and throws him out.

It takes a while for Lenny to befriend Linda. Then he begins her lifestyle makeover. Lenny also tricks her into telling him about the child she gave up for adoption. He persuades Linda to quit her profession and even bribes her violent pimp with basketball tickets to let Linda go.


Lenny then sets Linda up with a boxer-turned-onion farmer Kevin (Michael Rapaport). It appears to be a perfect match, until Kevin discovers Linda's background and leaves her.

Meanwhile, Amanda is having an affair with her colleague Jerry (Peter Weller), and Lenny finds out about it. Lenny and Linda console one another and sleep together. Lenny then reconciles with a guilt-ridden Amanda, realizing that they are still in love.

Linda makes one last attempt to win back farm boy Kevin, but as she drives back to the city, a helicopter drops out of the sky. Linda gives the pilot Don a lift and, before long, they end up getting married. The twist is that Linda is pregnant with Lenny's child. A year later, Lenny and Linda, with their individual children, meet in a toy store. They have each other's child, but they do not know it.

As Max, it becomes clear he is highly intelligent. Lenny becomes obsessed with learning the identity of Max's biological parents. After great difficulty, Lenny finally locates Max's mother prostitute and part-time porn star Linda Ash (Mira Sorvino).

Lenny makes an "appointment" with her. At first, Linda appears to be a dumb blonde with a crude sense of humor, along with delusions of becoming an actress. Lenny does not sleep with her and urges her to stop being a prostitute, but Linda becomes furious and throws him out.

It takes a while for Lenny to befriend Linda. Then he begins her lifestyle makeover. Lenny also tricks her into telling him about the child she gave up for adoption. He persuades Linda to quit her profession and even bribes her violent pimp with basketball tickets to let Linda go.

「今週の記事は何にしようかなあ・・・」と昨日の夜までまだ決まっていなかった。１月に４週続けてエイリアン４作品をやって、続いて、前日譚とも呼ばれる『プロメテウス』をやろうか、と思ったりもしてたんだけど、SFばっかりも何だなーと思って。それ以前にプロメテウス、まだ観ていない！DVDは手元にあるんだけど、観る暇がなくてね。

そんなこんなで昨日仕事から帰って来て、食後にＷＯＷＯＷ観てたら、ウディ･アレンの名作『誘惑のアフロディーテ』がやっていてね。「昔観たなあ～」なんて懐かしく思いながら、いつもなら平日の夜は映画観ないんだけど、めずらしく最後までそのまま観たんだ。

『誘惑のアフロディーテ』をその昔観たのはウディ・アレンの作品だからというより、ミラ・ソルヴィノが出演していたからだ。当時２７歳くらいかな。可愛らしい顔立ちに抜群のスタイルで、当時注目の的だった。

ルックスだけでなく、彼女はすごく頭が良くて、ハーヴァード大学を優秀な成績で卒業している。中国に興味があって留学経験があり中国語を流暢に話すそう。他にもフランス語も話せるとのことだ。そんな頭に生まれてみたい。

お話の方は、スポーツライターのレニー（ウディ・アレン）が、養子に取った子供マックスの実の母親でポルノ女優のリンダ（ミラ・ソルヴィノ）と知り合うことでドタバタな展開に発展していくというロマンティック・コメディ。ギリシャ神話の神々のナレーション劇で物語が進んで行くところがいかにもアメリカらしい。ミラは本作でアカデミー助演女優賞を獲得。他にも本作で数多くの賞を受賞した。

今月はバレンタインデーがあるので、恋愛月間？にしようかな。でも正直なところ、恋愛映画はあまり観てきていないんだよね。でも、これからは観てみようかな、なんて。英会話の勉強としては、恋愛映画など現実社会を舞台にセリフが豊富なジャンルの方がいいだろうね。これからは興味を持って行こうかな。



SUMMERY

Mighty Aphrodite is a 1995 romantic comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen. The screenplay was inspired by the mythological tale of Pygmalion.

Allen co-stars with Mira Sorvino, who received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.


PLOT

A Greek chorus narrates and comments—and Oedipus, Jocasta, Tiresias, and Cassandra sometimes directly intervene—in this modern fable.

Sportswriter Lenny Weinrib (Woody Allen) is married to the career-driven Amanda (Helena Bonham Carter), who wants a baby but because she cannot afford to get pregnant due to her job, she says that they will adopt.

Lenny is opposed to this, but Amanda always has her way, so they adopt a baby boy, whom they name Max.

今年に入ってからエイリアンシリーズをお届けしてきたけど、今週がシリーズ最後の４作目。エイリアンシリーズ最終日となった。

学生の頃、みんなで話題にした映画、エイリアン。その後は、テレビで何度も放送されるので何気なく観ていたけど、改めてＤＶＤを観なおしたり、こうして英語のアングルから理解してみたりすると、それぞれの作品がそれぞれの監督やキャストによって個性豊かに作られているんだなと実感するところだ。すばらしいね。

本シリーズは、映画界や音楽界が全盛だった１９８０年代からなる映画だ。その頃、携帯電話やインターネットはまだなかった。携帯電話やインターネットは今となってはなくてはならない存在だけど、それらがなかったからこそこうした良い映画が生まれたんだと思ったりもする。

Ripley discovers that the Alien queen has gained a human ability from her DNA as well: now possessing a womb, it can give birth to live offspring without the need for eggs and human hosts. The resulting newborn, bearing a mixture of human and Alien traits, recognizes Ripley as its mother and kills the Alien queen and Dr. Gediman (Brad Dourif).

Ripley and the surviving mercenaries make their way to the Betty. As they launch, the newborn hybrid attacks Call and kills DiStefano. Ripley kills it by using her own acidic blood to burn a hole through a viewpane, causing the creature to be sucked violently through the hole and into the vacuum of space. The survivors escape in the Betty as the Auriga collides into Earth.

Call is too late; the Aliens have already matured and quickly escape confinement, damaging the Auriga and killing most of its crew. Military scientist Dr. Wren (J. E. Freeman) reveals that the ship's default command in an emergency is to return to Earth.

Realizing this will unleash the Aliens on Earth, Ripley, the mercenaries, Wren, a marine named DiStefano (Raymond Cruz), and surviving Alien host Purvis (Leland Orser) decide to head for the Betty and use it to destroy the Auriga.
