The Ghostbusters are hired by Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver), whose apartment is haunted by a demonic spirit called Zuul, a demigod worshipped as a servant to Gozer the Gozerian, a Sumerian shape-changer god of destruction.

Venkman takes a particular interest in the case, competing for Dana's affection with her neighbor, Louis Tully (Rick Moranis). As they investigate, Dana is possessed by Zuul, which declares itself "The Gatekeeper", and Louis by a similar demon called Vinz Clortho, "The Keymaster."

Both demons speak of the coming of the destructive Gozer, and the Ghostbusters plan to keep the two apart.

Thereafter, the Ghostbusters' office is visited by Walter Peck (William Atherton), a lawyer representing the EPA, who arrests the team for operating an unlicensed nuclear device in their basement and orders their ghost containment grid deactivated, unleashing hundreds of captured ghosts onto the city.

Freed from the Ghostbusters' custody, Louis/Vinz advances toward Dana/Zuul's apartment while the escaped ghosts create havoc throughout the city.

Following their first encounter with a ghost, misfit parapsychologists Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) lose their jobs at Columbia University. Unable to research their discovery, the trio establish a paranormal exterminator service known as "Ghostbusters" in a retired firehouse.

Lacking customers and faced with dwindling funds, they are eventually hired by the Sedgewick Hotel to investigate a haunting. At the hotel, they capture their first ghost and deposit it in a "containment unit" located in the firehouse basement.

Paranormal activity begins to increase in New York City, and the Ghostbusters become celebrities containing it, while at the same time becoming increasingly burdened by the hectic schedule. The group later hire a fourth member, Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), to help them cope with the demands.

今週の１０月３１日（水）はハロウィンの日。ということで、今月はハロウィン企画をお届けしてきたけど、今週が最後のシリーズ。今週は、２３年ぶりの続編も話題の『ゴーストバスターズ』をテーマに英語学習をしていこう。

ゴースト～は１９８４年に製作されたホラーコメディ映画。明るくてハチャメチャなコメディ映画を得意とするアイヴァン・ライトマン監督作品で、出演にビル・マーレイ、脚本も兼ねるダン・エイクロイド、そしてヒロインにシガニー・ウィーヴァーというキャスティングで、テーマソングもノリが良く当時大ヒットした。１９８９年には続編も公開。そして現在２３年ぶりにパート３の話が持ち上がっている。

現在、オリジナルメンバーでのパート3を目指しているけど、ビル･マーレイだけが出演を拒否しているとか。なんでビルは『ゾンビランド』に出演して（本人役）、自身の代表作には出演しないんだ？って疑問を抱くところなんだけど、この辺はアメリカ人だもんね。

『羊たちの沈黙』の続編をジョディ･フォスターが拒否したり、『バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー』は続編がなかなか作られなくて、パート２ではマイケル・Ｊ・フォックス演ずるマーティはえらい年を取った高校生役になってしまった。『マスク』の続編もジム・キャリーがやっていたらなぁ・・・。なんてこと、ハリウッド映画にはたくさんあるんだよね。

そんなハリウッドのさまざまな事情はあるにせよ、ゴーストバスターズはすばらしい映画だ。中学生の時か高校生の時にテレビで観て以来ご無沙汰だったと思うので、改めてツタヤのネットレンタルで借りて昨日観た。なんて言うか、いいよねー。８０年代のアメリカ。これぞアメリカ。明るくて大きくて楽しいアメリカ。ほんとこの頃良かったよ。どこへ行ってしまったんだ、俺のアメリカ！・・・と自己の現在の想いは置いといて、英語の学習しましょ。

Sleepy Hollow まとめ

今週もハロウィン企画ということで、スリーピーホロウをテーマにお届けしたけどどうだったかな？

自分はこの映画をだいぶ前に観たんだけど、内容をいまひとつ覚えていなくて英文の方も鮮明には理解出来なかった。

日本人が英語をなかなか習得出来ない理由として、

『語順が逆だから』

とは良く聞く話だけど、問題はそこだけじゃないと思うんだな。

実際、英語ってすごく曖昧で、文章を読んだだけじゃよくわからないと思うんだよね。でも、日本語の場合、文章を読むだけでかなりのところまで理解することが出来る。そこが日本語のすばらしいところ。

でもそこにギャップがあって、日本人の感覚で、日本語の文章を読むのと同じように英文を理解しようとしても理解できない。それは、英文は日本語の文章ほど奥深く表現していないし、日本語ほど懇切丁寧に説明はなされないので、日本人は英語に対して多くの疑問を抱くんじゃないだろうか。

自分も英語力はまだまだなんだけど、実際のところ、英文を読む時はそんなに深読みせずに、良い意味で曖昧でいいんだと思うんだけどな。

『日本語と同じようには理解できないんだ』

ということをまず前提としてはどうかと思う。英文を日本語と同じレベルで理解しようとするとしんどくなってしまう。軽くでいいんだと思う。英語圏の人たちの感覚を知ることがまずは大切だね。


さて、今週もわからない単語が数多くあったし、曖昧な状態の単語も復習出来た。今週、赤文字（まったくわからなかった単語）となった単語は以下。

日本語だったら漢字があって、その関連性から意味をすぐにわかることが英語だったらわからないことが多い。

どうやったら、"decapitation"　が「首切り」につながるのか。日本語だったら「首」と「切り」ですぐに何のことかわかるよね。そういうことで、英語を学ぶときは日本語に訳して理解するんじゃなくて、日本語を捨てて英語で直接学ばないとなかなか理屈が合わないんだよね。

"culprit"（犯人）も知ってないとわからない単語だね。"apparition"（幽霊）も同じく。発音が"ri"のところに来るから注意だ。

"constable"（巡査）も難しいな。"lieutenant [luːténən]"（警部補）はアメリカ映画で頻繁に出てくるけどね。

"prosthetic"（補綴の）、"autopsy"（検死）、このあたりはちょっと専門的な単語だ。

"steed"（馬）、"skeptical"（懐疑的な）、"delve"（研究する）、"thward"（妨害する）などは知らなかったけどそんなに難しい単語じゃないね。覚えておかないといけないレベルの単語かな。

"gnarl"（木のこぶ）は発音注意。"g"は発音せずに[nάɚl※ﾅｰﾙ]だ。

"murky"（陰気な）、覚えよう。"enslaver"はある程度予測が出来たね。"slave"（奴隷）だから。

Sleepy Hollow 4

Crane finds the Horseman's skull is missing, and eventually uncovers a murky plot revolving around revenge and land rights with the Horseman controlled by Katrina's stepmother Lady Van Tassel, who sends the killer after Katrina now to solidify her hold on what she considers her property, a piece of land unjustly claimed by Katrina's father.

Following a fight in the local windmill and a stagecoach chase through the woods, Crane eventually thwarts Lady Van Tassel by returning the skull to the Horseman, who regains his head and heads back to Hell along with his enslaver. With his job in Sleepy Hollow over, Crane, with Katrina and Young Masbath, returns to New York in time for the new century.

Crane begins his investigation, remaining highly skeptical about the supernatural elements in the case until he encounters the Headless Horseman himself, who kills Magistrate Samuel Phillipse on sight.

Delving further into the mystery with the aid of the orphaned Young Masbath, whose father Jonathan was a victim of the Horseman, Crane discovers within the Western Woods the Horseman's grave, as well as his entry point into the natural world from the supernatural — the gnarled Tree of the Dead.

PLOT

In 1799, New York City, Ichabod Crane is a 24-year-old officer. He is dispatched by his superiors to the Westchester County hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, New York, to investigate a series of brutal slayings in which the victims have been found decapitated: Peter Van Garrett, his son Dirk, and the widow Emily Winship.

A pioneer of new, unproven investigative techniques such as finger-printing and autopsies, Crane arrives in Sleepy Hollow armed with his bag of scientific tools only to be informed by the town's elders that the murderer is not of flesh and blood, rather a headless supernatural warrior from beyond the grave who rides at night on a massive black steed.
