On the day of the wedding, just as the priest begins the ceremony, Lucy finally confesses everything and tells the family she is in love with Jack rather than Peter.

Ashley Bartlett Bacon, Peter's real fiancée (who happens to be married herself), also arrives to stop the wedding. As the family argues, Lucy slips out unnoticed, unsure of her future.

Some time later, as Lucy collects tokens from passengers at the train station, Jack places an engagement ring in the token tray of her booth. With the entire Callaghan family watching, he walks into her booth and proposes to her.

Lucy Moderatz (Sandra Bullock) is a lonely token collector on the Chicago Transit Authority who has a secret crush on a handsome commuter named Peter Callaghan (Gallagher), whose name Lucy does not know.

On Christmas day, she rescues him from an oncoming train after a mugger pushes him onto the tracks. He falls into a coma, and she accompanies him to the hospital, where a nurse overhears her musing aloud, "I was going to marry him." Misinterpreting her, the nurse tells his family that she is his fiancée.

今週の映画ＤＥ英語は、サンドラ・ブロックが主演したラブロマンス『あなたが寝てる間に...』。１９９５年の映画だ。今からもう１８年前の映画とあって、現在４８歳のサンドラ・ブロック、撮影当事のサンドラは２９歳くらい。１９９３年、シルベスター・スタローンと共演した『デモリションマン』、１９９４年にはキアヌ・リーヴスと共演して大ヒットした『スピード』に続き、すごく乗っていた時期の作品だ。

本作はすごく素敵なお話で、主演のサンドラはとてもキュート。心温まる作品になっている。監督は、ジョン・タートルトーブ。この監督、結構ヒット作を飛ばしている。

今週はリュック・ベッソン監督・脚本、ジャン・レノ、ナタリー・ポートマン、ゲーリー・ロールドマン出演の『レオン』をお送りした。うーん、英語学習を通じて映画のシーンを思い出して、なんだか泣けてきたな。エンディングのスティングによる曲 "Shape of my Heart"がまた良かったよね。ほんとに良い映画だ。また改めてDVDで観たい。

Léon: The Professional レオン （４）

When Mathilda returns home from grocery shopping, an NYPD ESU team sent by Stansfield takes her hostage and attempts to infiltrate Léon's apartment. Léon ambushes the ESU team and grabs Mathilda.

Back in his apartment, Léon creates a quick escape for Mathilda by smashing a hole in an air shaft. He reassures her and tells her that he loves her and that she has given him "a taste for life", moments before the police come for him.

Mathilda quickly discovers that Léon is a "cleaner", or hit man. She begs him to take care of her and to teach her his skills as a cleaner. She wants to avenge the murder of her four-year-old brother, telling Léon that he was the only one of her family she loved.

Léon shows her how to use guns, including a scoped rifle. In return, she runs his errands, cleans his apartment, and teaches him how to read. Several times Mathilda tells Léon "I love you", but he offers no response.

Leone "Léon" Montana (Jean Reno) is a hitman (or "cleaner", as he refers to himself) living a solitary life in New York City's Little Italy. His work comes from a mafioso named Tony (Danny Aiello), who operates from the "Supreme Macaroni Company" restaurant.

Léon spends his idle time engaging in calisthenics, nurturing a houseplant that early on he describes as his "best friend", and (in one scene) watching old Gene Kelly musicals.

今週は、『レオン』。言わずと知れたリュック・ベッソン監督・脚本、ジャン・レノ、ナタリー・ポートマン、ゲーリー・オールドマン出演の感動作だ。

今月はバレンタインデーとアカデミー賞にちなんだ作品を・・・と思っていたけど、本作レオンは実は公開された1994年のアカデミー賞にノミネートもされていない。リュック・ベッソン、ジャン・レノと、フランス色が強いけどアメリカ映画なのになぜ・・・。こんなに名作なのに。

The Last of the Mohicans ラスト・オブ・モヒカン （まとめ）

今週は、アカデミー賞最有力とも目されているダニエル・デイ＝ルイス主演の『リンカーン』にちなんで、ダニエルの隠れた名作とも言える『ラスト･オブ･モヒカン』をお送りした。昨日終わってしまったけど、バレンタインデーにもちなんた。ラスト・オブ～は、決して恋愛映画ではないけど、恋愛要素がたくさん盛り込まれた活劇だ。

この映画を当事映画館に観に行ったんだけど、ものすごく惹かれたのが、劇中で、愛する人を敵から守るために、敢えて離れ離れになることを決意し、ホークアイ（ダニエル）がコーラ（マデリーン・ストウ）に放つセリフ。

"You stay alive! No matter how long it takes, I will find you!"
（生きるんだ！どんなに時間がかかっても、俺はお前を見つける！）

まあ、ほんとにかっこいい。ダニエルの熱演。この映画をまだ観ていない人はほんと観てみてよ。絶対にいいから。

映画で感動したセリフがもうひとつある。それは、ジャン・レノとナタリー・ポートマンの『レオン』だ。

クライマックス。アパートの一室に追い詰めれて、レオンがマチルダ（ナタリー・ポートマン）を助けるために自分は危険な場所に残り、マチルダだけを狭い通気口？（じゃないかも）から逃がすときのレオンのセリフ。

You give me a taste for vibe. I wanna be happy, sleep in the bed, have roots. You'll never be alone again, Mathilda.

このシーン、涙が出たね。実は、日本語吹き替えも良いんだ、これが。多分、声優は大塚明夫さんだと思うんだけど、日本語でのこのシーンも感動的なので、また機会があれば改めて観て欲しいな。

The Last of the Mohicans is a 1992 historical epic film set in 1757 during the French and Indian War and produced by Morgan Creek Pictures. It was directed by Michael Mann and based on James Fenimore Cooper's novel of the same name and George B. Seitz's 1936 film adaptation, owing more to the latter than the novel.

The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, and Jodhi May, with Russell Means, Wes Studi, Eric Schweig, and Steven Waddington in supporting roles.

The soundtrack features music by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman, and the song "I Will Find You" by Clannad. The main theme of the film is taken from the tune "The Gael" by Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean. Released on September 25, 1992, in the United States,

The Last of the Mohicans was met with nearly-universal praise from critics as well as being commercially successful during its box-office run.


PLOT

During the French and Indian War in 1757, Mohican Chingachgook (Russell Means) with his sons, Uncas (Eric Schweig) and adopted white Nathaniel Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), visit the Cameron frontier household. Friend Jack Winthrop (Edward Blatchford) tells them he is gathering militia for the British army.

General Webb agrees to grant the militia leave if their homes are attacked, in return for their reinforcement of Colonel Edmund Munro (Maurice Roëves) at Fort William Henry. Newly arrived Major Duncan Heyward (Steven Waddington) and native Magua (Wes Studi) are tasked with escorting Munro's daughters, Cora (Madeleine Stowe) and Alice (Jodhi May), from Albany to their father at the fort.

Duncan wishes to marry Cora, but she professes friendship only. Magua leads the group into an ambush by his Huron party. Hawkeye, Uncas and Chingachgook come across the attack as Magua escapes and save Duncan, Cora and Alice, deciding to escort them to the fort.

Along the way the Cameron home is found razed and its occupants murdered. The group arrive to find the fort under siege by the French, but sneak in. Munro is surprised at his daughters’ arrival; he had warned them to stay away, but Magua schemed to reunite the family.

The fort can only hold for three more days, so a messenger is sent to General Webb for help. To Duncan's chagrin, Cora and Hawkeye are drawn to each other, so he resentfully denies that the razing of the Cameron homestead took place.

Munro therefore refuses to let Jack and the militia leave to defend their homes. Hawkeye secretly helps them escape anyway, but is arrested for sedition and sentenced to hang despite Cora's pleas.

The French General Montcalm (Patrice Chéreau) generously offers all in the fort safe passage to Albany if they surrender and vow to never fight again. Munro reluctantly accepts after Montcalm shows Webb’s intercepted message, showing that no aid is forthcoming.

Magua berates Montcalm for making peace, revealing that his village was destroyed and his children killed by Munro's troops, assisted by the Mohawk; though he regained his freedom under Mohawk captivity, his wife remarried believing he was dead.

Montcalm, though intending to honor the terms, would not mind if Magua were to deal with the British. The retreating British soldiers and their families are ambushed by Magua's men. Magua cuts out Munro's heart from his body, but not before promising to kill Munro's daughters to extinguish his line.

Hawkeye, Cora, Alice, Uncas, Chingachgook, Duncan and a few others flee in canoes across Lake George and down a river to a cave behind a waterfall, but Magua and his men are soon upon them.

For their safety, Hawkeye urges Cora and her sister to submit if captured and promises he will find them later, then leaps with his father and brother down the waterfall. Magua takes Duncan and the two sisters to a Huron village.

Magua negotiates his captives’ fate with the sachem when they are interrupted by the arrival of an unarmed Hawkeye. With Duncan translating in French, Hawkeye convinces the chief that Magua is acting for his own interests like the colonial powers, rather than for the good of the tribe.

The chief decides that Cora is to be burned alive to atone for Magua's children, gives Alice to replace Magua’s wife so that both bloodlines can continue and orders Duncan's return to the British to placate them. Hawkeye is released in recognition of his bravery, but pleads to take Cora’s place.

Duncan deliberately mistranslates, sacrificing himself instead so Hawkeye and Cora can escape, whilst Magua curses the sachem and departs with Alice and his men. From a safe distance, Hawkeye mercifully shoots Duncan as he is burned alive.

Uncas, who had cared for Alice throughout, races ahead to intercept Magua's band, killing several warriors before engaging Magua. Magua kills him, then drops his body off the cliff. Rather than join Magua, Alice follows Uncas by jumping to her death. Seeing this, an enraged Hawkeye and Chingachgook set upon the Hurons and slay several. Chingachgook kills Magua, avenging his son. After a ritual for Uncas with Cora and Hawkeye, Chingachgook announces that he is the last of the Mohicans.

Magua berates Montcalm for making peace, revealing that his village was destroyed and his children killed by Munro's troops, assisted by the Mohawk; though he regained his freedom under Mohawk captivity, his wife remarried believing he was dead.

Montcalm, though intending to honor the terms, would not mind if Magua were to deal with the British. The retreating British soldiers and their families are ambushed by Magua's men. Magua cuts out Munro's heart from his body, but not before promising to kill Munro's daughters to extinguish his line.

Hawkeye, Cora, Alice, Uncas, Chingachgook, Duncan and a few others flee in canoes across Lake George and down a river to a cave behind a waterfall, but Magua and his men are soon upon them.

For their safety, Hawkeye urges Cora and her sister to submit if captured and promises he will find them later, then leaps with his father and brother down the waterfall. Magua takes Duncan and the two sisters to a Huron village.

Magua negotiates his captives’ fate with the sachem when they are interrupted by the arrival of an unarmed Hawkeye. With Duncan translating in French, Hawkeye convinces the chief that Magua is acting for his own interests like the colonial powers, rather than for the good of the tribe.

The chief decides that Cora is to be burned alive to atone for Magua's children, gives Alice to replace Magua’s wife so that both bloodlines can continue and orders Duncan's return to the British to placate them. Hawkeye is released in recognition of his bravery, but pleads to take Cora’s place.

Duncan deliberately mistranslates, sacrificing himself instead so Hawkeye and Cora can escape, whilst Magua curses the sachem and departs with Alice and his men. From a safe distance, Hawkeye mercifully shoots Duncan as he is burned alive.

Uncas, who had cared for Alice throughout, races ahead to intercept Magua's band, killing several warriors before engaging Magua. Magua kills him, then drops his body off the cliff. Rather than join Magua, Alice follows Uncas by jumping to her death. Seeing this, an enraged Hawkeye and Chingachgook set upon the Hurons and slay several. Chingachgook kills Magua, avenging his son. After a ritual for Uncas with Cora and Hawkeye, Chingachgook announces that he is the last of the Mohicans.
