今週の"エイリアン"という宇宙を舞台にした映画の中から、それにまつわる英単語がいろいろと登場した。
extraterrestrial（地球圏外の）、stasis（コールドスリープのための装置）、planetoid（小惑星）、abort（発射を中止する）、decompression（減圧）、activate（作動させる）、blast（爆発する）などは宇宙を舞台にしたお話に登場しそうな単語だ。
エイリアンという凶暴な未知の存在に対しては、antagonist （敵対者）や、stalk（忍び寄る）、chamber（エイリアンの卵が入った房）、quarantine（隔離）、corrosive（腐食性の）、unharmed（無傷の）、flamethrower（火炎放射器）、ambush（待ち伏せ）、decapitate（首を切る）、choke（窒息させる）、arm（武装する）などの単語が使われた。
それにしても赤文字の単語は難しいものが多いけど、いろんな単語があって面白いね。しかし何度も目にしないとなかなか覚えられそうにないな。結局、いかに繰り返すかなんだよね。普段聞き慣れないロシア語でも、テレビのニュースで大統領の名前など繰り返し耳にすると自然に覚える。繰り返し繰り返し。面白くなくても面倒でもそれが大事。がんばろう。
さて、今週の英文、英単語のまとめ。おさらいをしておこう。来週は、今週に引き続き、続編『エイリアン２』だよ。

PLOT
The commercial towing spaceship Nostromo is on a return trip to Earth, hauling a refinery and twenty million tons of mineral ore and carrying its seven-member crew in stasis. Detecting a transmission of unknown origin from a nearby planetoid, the ship's computer awakens the crew.
Acting on standing orders from their corporate employers, they set out to investigate the transmission's source. Landing the ship on the planetoid causes it some damage, so Captain Dallas (Tom Skerritt), Executive Officer Kane (John Hurt), and Navigator Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) set out to investigate the signal while Warrant Officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), Science Officer Ash (Ian Holm), and Engineers Brett (Harry Dean Stanton) and Parker (Yaphet Kotto) stay behind to make repairs.
Dallas, Kane, and Lambert discover that the signal is coming from a derelict alien spacecraft. Inside they find the remains of a large alien creature whose ribs appear to have been forced outward from the inside.
